General Info
Castle Caulfield in County Tyrone was built by Sir Toby Caulfield in the years between 1611 and 1619. He had been granted these lands as part of the Ulster Plantation, and he chose to build his castle on the site of an Earlier building occupied by the O'Donnelly clan who were expelled from these lands. A joist from one of the walls was dendro-dated to about 1282 and may belong to this earlier fort.

The building is three storeys high with attics, with many large mullioned windows and tall chimney stacks. The oldest part of the existing building is the gatehouse which has Tudor-style doorways, murder-holes and gun-loops. The Caulfield arms are still visible over the entrance. Some two-thirds of the castle walls still stand although it is a roofless ruin.

The castle was attacked and captured in 1641 - the O'Donnellys got their revenge - but once the Rebellion was over in 1641, the buildings were reoccupied until the 1660s.

Location
Castle Caulfield is situated in the village of Castlecaulfield, which is just 2 miles west of Dungannon and 2 miles south west of Donaghmore.
