Cycling


Quiet country roads, cycle paths and woodland all provide excellent opportunities for cycling in the Dungannon District. There are also a number of cycle routes to follow (see below). Bicycle hire is available at the Ulysess Grant Homestead for £1 per hour. Please refer to our Sports Pages for details of local cycle clubs. National Route 94 of the National Cycle Network is a circuit of Lough Neagh and is known as the Loughshore Trail. It is open, signed and covered by a detailed printed map. Some 128 miles long, the Loughshore Trail is an ideal distance for a short cycling break.

Visitors can enjoy the tranquillity and peacefulness of the shoreline, explore the outstanding early Christian architecture, visit the ruins of strategic castles, or stop off to visit some of the bird hides that surround the Lough.

National Route 95 of the National Cycle Network goes north from Tynan in Northern Ireland to the shore of Lough Neagh and then across to Pettigoe via Newtonstewart. The route is open and signed.

There are 3 waymarked trails in The Clogher Valley known as the The Carleton Trail. The main trail is The Red route known as the Carleton Trail. It is a circular route from the village of Clogher. It follows leafy lane ways and forest tracks passing St. Patrick's Chair and Well, chambered graves, Carleton traditional Irish cottage, Knockmany Hill, Lumford's Glen, Lough More and the beautiful surrounding countryside before returning to Clogher. The trail is associated with William Carleton a 19th Century poet and author from the area.

The Green Route passes through heather-clad blanket bog. Gentle, quiet lanes and country roads. The Black Route is the shortest and takes in Carleton's birthplace.
