Become a Prince's Trust business mentor and help a young entrepreneur.
If you ever fancied becoming a business mentor but thought you had to be an entrepreneur yourself, you'd be wrong.

The Prince's Trust is looking for local volunteer business mentors from all walks of life who can support young people in business start-ups. With the support of Invest Nl, The Prince's Trust helps to start over 200 businesses across Northern Ireland each year. The young people they support are 18-30 year olds who are unemployed, educational underachievers, in or leaving care, or offenders or ex offenders. To check if you are eligible, ask yourself these questions, are you:
  • Able to spare 2-3 hours a month of your time?
  • Willing to provide guidance, support and a listening ear to a young entrepreneur?
  • Committed to taking on a life-changing challenge?

If your answer to these questions is yes and you want to find out more, get in touch. Call Lisa on 028 7127 6488 or Email: lisa.brown@princes-trustorg.uk

YouthAction - Young Mums 'Moving On'

The Moving On Programme for young mothers is planning to start two new programmes in September, one of the programmes will be in the Cloqher Valley area and another in the Armagh area. Moving On was developed a number of years ago to address the needs of young mothers aged 16-25 years. From its conception over 500 young mothers have participated in the project.

The project offers young mothers the opportunity to increase their self-confidence while gaining qualifications in ECDL, Driver Theory Testing and First Aid.

Moving on supports the young mothers in many ways from one to one support through a peer support worker, to financial assistance for childcare, travel and subsistence.

YouthAction is now at the recruiting stage of both programmes, if you or your organisation knows of any young mothers that would enjoy the project please signpost them to YouthAction Nl Moving On Programme.

This is a great opportunity for young mothers that may be considering returning to training or the workplace, likewise it's a good opportunity for young mothers who would like to polish up their skills and have some time for themselves!

15 young mothers in the Dungannon area have just completed the Moving On Programme, which was a great success.

For further information please contact Trish or Rachael at YouthAction South Tyrone Office, President Grants Homestead, 45 Oergenagh Road, Dungannon Tel: 028 855 56882 or Email: youth-action@tiscali.co.uk

    Trouble getting broadband?
Are you finding it difficult to get Broadband in your area? It has been brought to the attention of COSTA and many other rural communities that Broadband is not available in some rural areas! Broadband internet access allows high download speeds and provides internet access and phone calls on the same line at the same time. For some rural areas the phone lines themselves can be a problem, with some lines in a state of bad repair and physically incapable of carrying a broadband signal. Also the distances between people's homes and their nearest exchange are often too great for broadband to work (usually any distance over 8.5km presents a major problem for Broadband).

COSTA believes that it is very important to campaign for broadband to be made available in all rural areas. We believe it is vitally important for rural communities to have equity of access to high speed broadband so that rural communities are not left behind or denied equitable possibilities for business, study and recreation enjoyed by urban residents.

If you are experiencing any difficulties in getting Broadband, please contact the COSTA office with your details: Tel: 028 855 56880 or Email: costa.network@virgin.net

    Blackwater Bonanza at Benburb

    21st July 2007

Dungannon & District rambling club hosted a day-long celebration of walking based around the beautiful Benburb Valley on Saturday 21st July.

The recent heavy rainfall had left conditions underfoot somewhat muddy but only added to the glory of the River Blackwater as it charged through the limestone gorge in full spate.

A total of 57 ramblers from 16 different towns and villages on both sides of the border met at the Servite Priory where Brendan McAnallan of the O’Neill Country Historical Society set the scene for the day with a brief outline of the turbulent history of this area and the strategic significance of the Blackwater.

Walk leaders from the Dungannon club, May Walker, Joan Hughes and Bernie Shields then guided the ramblers through Benburb Valley and onwards along the Ulster Way route, following the river via Blackwatertown, Charlemont and Moy to the Argory.

In the afternoon Benburb Valley echoed to the sounds of childrens’ voices as eco-guides from both Dungannon and Armagh councils led a further group of 55 children and adults from Emyvale, Truagh, Aughnacloy, Derrynoose, Keady and Dungannon along the recently opened Ecotrail.

This was one in the series of rambling events organised by the Blackwater Regional Partnership’s community support programme with funding from Border Action through the INTERREG 111A Programme for Ireland/Northern Ireland.

Each of the rambling clubs within the partnership area of Armagh, Dungannon & South Tyrone and Monaghan have hosted events that showcase the best of what their area has to offer in terms of landscape, heritage and hospitality. These events are open to everyone – so please join us on our next ramble.

    Join our Next Event!

On Saturday 25th August the Washingbay walking club invite you all to enjoy a walk with a little less effort along the flat terrain of the Coalisland Canal towpath and onwards along laneways, bog ramparts, minor country roads and riverbank, following the River Blackwater on its final journey to the Loughshore (approx 9 miles). Registration is at the Washingbay Centre at 10.30am. You can also choose to do a shorter 4 mile route with a later registration time of 12 noon. We have followed the course of the River Blackwater from its humble beginnings in the Clogher Valley and Sliabh Hills and now you have the opportunity to follow the last part of its journey to reach Lough Neagh – we hope you will join us!
